Have you ever arrived at a destination, only to look back at the past 30 minutes and wonder how the heck you got where you are? As humans, our minds are in a constant state of thought and commotion. As a result, it can be very easy to become mindless in our daily actions, stagnant in our progression and thoughtless in our decisions. We get in our comfortable routines, shut down our intention, and essentially float through life.
Two years ago I was doing just that: floating through life. I had just been accepted into nursing school, I was working my 6am-6pm graveyard shift 3x a week at the hospital, and overall I was leading a relatively comfortable and safe life. One day I remember leaving work at 6am and driving straight to school where I spent the next 5 hours fighting to stay awake. While sitting at that desk, I began to question everything; What was I doing in life? Had I reached my peak and was this really the path that excited me? I drove home that night with the realization that nothing had changed in my life for the past 2 years. I was stuck in autopilot, doing the same things day after day, and living life with little thought to my actions or my “why.”
That night I opened up a tab on the trusty world wide web, and I listened to talk after talk on the topics of intention, mindfulness, and living LIFE ON PURPOSE.
After several hours watching these videos, I knew in my soul that something had to change. For months I had been questioning my path, unsure if it was even what I wanted, but fear had held me back from taking action. That night I decided to break the cycle. That night I decided to “Live on Purpose!”
[Very] long story short, I ended up dropping out of nursing school, starting multiple businesses, traveled the world, and now wake up every day choosing what life looks like. I was finally living the life I wanted on my terms.
What is a Life on Purpose?
To me, a life on purpose is one that you choose every single day. It is NOT a life that just happens to you. A Life on Purpose is all about creating a life on your terms; one that makes you excited to wake up every day. A life of balance, happiness, and one that is completely in your control. A life on purpose means that each and every thing that happens to you is a result of a conscious choice you made to get there. YOU control your destiny.
So my question for you is…are you living a life on purpose? Are you in control of your destiny or are you letting fear, expectations, and limiting beliefs hold you back?
If you feel stuck in a cycle and you are ready to break it, today is the day. It doesn’t matter what has happened in the past (childhood trauma, debt, divorce) all that matters is your commitment to pursuing “life on purpose” starting today. All it takes is one interrupting thought to create a completely different life.
“Wherever you are in your life right now is both temporary, and exactly where you need to be. You have arrived at this moment to learn what you must learn, so that you can become the person you need to be to create the life you truly want.” -Hal Elrod
So how do we actually create life on purpose?
The first step is determining what your “life on purpose” looks like: What does your dream life entail and why. This is the most important step, because without a clear vision of your dream life, you have nothing to work towards and no map to follow. So write it out, dream big, discover what it is you want most in life. This will be your guide along your journey to a Life On Purpose, so give it some thought.
The next step is accepting responsibility: “The degree to which you accept responsibility for everything in your life is exactly the degree of personal power you have to change or create anything in your life.” -Hal Elrod
Sure, you may have been dealt a rough hand in your life, but that does not excuse you from the responsibility of improvement. The night that I made the shift in my life, was the same night I recognized that I was responsible for the outcome. For so long I had placed blame for where I was at. “My parents raised me that way,” “He left me, what was I supposed to do?” These were in the long list of common excuses I gave for staying small. When I was finally able to recognize that my life was under my control, I was able to begin the change.
Today I challenge you to state responsibility out loud! You may not be in control of what happens to you, but you are in 100% control of how you react. Once you accept this responsibility, you are able to make massive change.
Next, become, don’t do: “Always remember that who you’re becoming is far more important than what you’re doing, and yet, it is what you’re doing that is determining who you’re becoming.” -Hal Elrod
Have you ever stopped to think that what you’re doing in this very moment is effecting who you are becoming, and furthermore, what your life will look like forever? It is a humbling thought, really. Our everyday actions create our reality. What did you do today that lead you closer to the life you dream of?
Did you hit snooze again this morning? Be honest! If you did, you essentially told yourself that it’s okay NOT to follow thru on your commitments. Did you make that call you’ve been meaning to make? Buy the domain for your new website? Did you take any action at all towards your dream? Each and every decision you make has a lasting effect on the outcome of your life. I challenge you to make each choice with intention and live as though that one decision could change your entire life…because it can!
One of my favorite motivational speakers and all around self-help icon, is Mel Robbins. Mel talks a lot about breaking cycles. She is most well-known for her idea of the 5 second rule. It’s all about interrupting the pattern of our lives and making small, yet significant changes by simply counting 5…4….3…2…1…and then taking action. I encourage you to put this practice into action. Tomorrow morning, when you are tempted to push snooze again…Don’t! Count 5…4…3…2…1…then get up! Just by disrupting these small, yet significant patterns, you are changing who you are becoming and you’re changing what your life will look like forever.
“If you want your life to be different, you have to willing to do something different first.” -Kevin Bracy
Who do you need to become in order to create the life you’ve always wanted? Too many people accept a life of mediocrity, believing that is all they are worthy of. Even high achievers in one area of life can settle for mediocrity in another. Why?? There is nothing that says you have to settle for less than you want in any area of life: financial, health, freedom, relationships, business, emotional, love…you can have it all. You are just as worthy and capable of creating extraordinary success and happiness as anyone alive; you simply need to dedicate time each day to becoming the person you need to be in order to achieve that extraordinary life. The most incredible life you can dream of is available and waiting for you to become the person that can handle and attract that life.
“Your level of success will rarely exceed your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.” -Hal Elrod
The last step that is crucial in creating a Life on Purpose is to look around: It may sound silly, but research has shown that we become like the average of the top 5 people we spend time with. Yep, you heard me, you are becoming who you are with. So take inventory. When you surround yourself with successful high achievers, who are living the kind of life you desire, inevitably their patterns of behavior will rub off on you. So, back to step one, it is crucial to discover what your “life on purpose” looks like, and then find and surround yourself with people who are already living that lifestyle. Even if you are far below them now, just know, you will become more like them by immersing yourself in their presence and learning from the habits they have created.
If you are struggling to get out of a funk or you find yourself focusing on the negative consistently, it may be time to evaluate who you are spending your time with and make the necessary changes to Level Up. Find and surround yourself with people who make you want to better your life and support you on your journey to creating your life on purpose.

Today is the day to wake up and change the pattern. Life is too short to float through, it is time to choose your path. If we don’t change now, we won’t change. If we don’t improve now, our life won’t improve. If you want extraordinary results, you need to become extraordinary in your daily living. The “someday mentality” will never produce extraordinary results. Don’t wait until next week, next paycheck, next time it’s convenient…you have to take action today to create a “life on purpose.” The life you dream of is one decision away!
